The Best Prepaid Plans for Nexus 5 Owners

Share & Bookmark
You already know you can save a lot of money by switching to Straight Talk (about $950 per year). But which plan is the right one for you and your cell phone needs? This article in the online technology magazine Make Use Of by Kannon Yamada breaks it down for Nexus 5 users specifically based on four simple questions:
  •     Do you rarely use a cell phone?
  •     Do talk and text all the time but don’t use much data?
  •     Do you use lots of data, talk and text?
  •     Do you use primarily data, but not other device services?

This article specifically relates to the Nexus 5, but the Straight Talk advantages mentioned apply to most devices.

Yamada recommends Straight Talk if you’re someone who’s constantly on the phone, “because of its discounts for paying a full year up-front, and reasonably large LTE data cap (2.5 GB).” LTE speeds are available on the Nexus 5 with Straight Talk’s BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) plan, and the article says no other carrier’s LTE service is as easy to set up.

Also, if you’re someone that consistently uses a lot of data, Yamada says Straight Talk is the best no contract carrier. Read the entire article here, and ask us any Nexus 5, SIM card or BYOP questions in the comments.

Don’t Take it From Us – Why You Should Switch to Straight Talk

Share & Bookmark

We've told you about the benefits of switching to Straight Talk (no contracts, saving nearly $950 per year, America’s most dependable networks, etc.), but don’t just take it from us.

Yahoo! Voices contributor, Celeste Straube, recently tried Straight Talk for an entire year and wrote about her experience. A few of her favorite things about Straight Talk were:
  • “As far as call quality and service area, I couldn't be happier.”
  • “As soon as I switched from AT&T to a Straight Talk phone that uses Verizon towers, I noticed a drastic improvement in call clarity and a decrease in the number of dropped calls.”
  • “The price is also a great benefit, as I didn't have unlimited talk or data with AT&T and was always worried about going over my allotted amount.”
  • “If you are someone who lives and works in the same zip code, I would completely recommend Straight Talk for your wireless needs."

Straight Talk Wireless® Donates More Than $1,000,000 to Make-A-Wish® for Second Consecutive Year

Share & Bookmark “Give A Minute, Help Make-A-Wish®” Initiative Draws More Than One Million Participants
Straight Talk Wireless® donated more than $1,000,000 to Make-A-Wish® today as a result of the successful “Give A Minute, Help Make-A-Wish” program. During the month of September, a leading wireless provider donated $1 to Make-A-Wish for every consumer who took a minute to learn about Straight Talk at more than 3,000 Walmart stores nationwide. In-store participation by hundreds of thousands of consumers along with a social sharing effort made it possible to reach the goal and help Make-A-Wish grant wishes for children with life threatening medical conditions.

“Straight Talk is honored to continue its partnership with Make-A-Wish for the second year in a row,” said F. J. Pollak, president and CEO of TracFone Wireless, Inc. “We are thrilled to provide an easy way for Walmart customers to learn about the money they can save with Straight Talk while helping grant wishes in their local community.”

Straight Talk Wireless offers the Same Phones, the Same Networks, at Half the Cost*.  Plans include a $45 per month option with Unlimited** talk, text and data and nationwide coverage on America’s largest and most dependable networks.

“Once again, Straight Talk is helping us grant more life-changing wishes that help sick kids feel better and sometimes even get better,” said David A. Williams, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America. “The tremendous response and participation in ‘Give A Minute, Help Make-A-Wish’ is truly a testament to the caring nature of people in communities throughout the country.”

For the second consecutive year, Straight Talk set the donation goal of $1,000,000 to Make-A-Wish. Both 2012 and 2013 programs successfully surpassed the goal to help grant wishes of children across the country with life-threatening medical conditions.

We’d like to thank all of you for your participation in the Give A Minute, Help Make-A-Wish®” program and support for Make-A-Wish over the past two years.

FLW Pro Angler Profile: JT Kenney

Share & Bookmark
Have you entered our Fish With a Pro sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip for two to Lake Chickamauga, TN? Enter now and you could be fishing with a pro in no time!

Now, let’s introduce you to one of our favorite Straight Talk FLW pros, JT Kenney.

JT Kenney with a two big snooks from the Sebastian Inlet.

Hailing from Frostburg Maryland, JT Kenney has been a pro angler for 12 years. He is almost completely self-taught and looks back on the days when he would strap a fishing pole on his back, hop on his mini motorcycle and spend the day fishing in ponds, creeks and the head waters of the Potomac River. From ponds all the way to the national circuit, here’s a little more about million-dollar grossing JT Kenney.

Straight Talk: Hi JT, thanks for chatting with us today! We have to ask, around how many days per year do you fish?
JT Kenney: I spend about 220 days per year on the water, so a more than half of the year.

ST: What was your most memorable tournament as a fishing pro?
JT: My very first tour level event in 2002. I won the whole thing and got a small taste of victory.

ST: What is your biggest catch in competition?
JT: My biggest tournament catch was a 9.12 pounder at the Bass Master tournament. It felt like a big thing of money on the other end of the line!

ST: Nice! What is your favorite pre-event meal?
JT: Anything from what I like to call “God’s Grocery Store”—sushi, fish, deer, duck, fish, mushrooms from the woods, and oysters I knock off rocks myself!

ST: Sounds delicious. What else do you like to do when you’re not fishing?
JT: I like hunting, salt water fishing, and cooking.

ST: What is your best piece of advice for an aspiring angler?
JT: I always tell them to spend more time on the water - that’s how you learn to be successful. I can’t tell you everything there is to know, but just be out there and enjoy it.

Thanks JT. Now head over to and you could be on a boat with a pro angler like him!

FLW Pro Angler Profile: Scott Canterbury

Share & Bookmark
We’re thrilled to announce our Fish With A Pro sweepstakes. Enter to win a trip for two to Lake Chickamauga, TN to fish with an FLW pro angler! You know you want to be out on the water.

Meet our friend, Straight Talk sponsored FLW pro Scott Canterbury, a six year pro angler from Alabama who loves ‘flippin’ a jig’. We had the opportunity to sit down with Scott and ask him a few questions about his career in pro fishing. Read on to learn more about Scott.

Straight Talk: Scott, thanks for joining us today! When did you start fishing?
Scott: I started fishing at just 3 years old. I remember sitting in the live well of the boat with my dad and uncle while they fished.

Straight Talk: Wow! So then at what age did you start fishing competitively?
Scott: I started competing at 12 years old, and then really picked it up at 16 when I could drive.  While I do love the fellowship of fishing, I enjoy the competition even more. I’m going on my 6th year as a pro angler.

Straight talk: How much time per week do you spend fishing?
Scott: About 45 hours/week.

Straight Talk: When you’re out on the water and you make a big catch, how does it feel?
Scott: It feels like a major adrenalin rush! Even though a bass fight is not a long one (they’re smaller fish, so it takes about 30 seconds), it’s the most exciting moment on the water.

Straight Talk: What do you like to eat to prepare for a long day on the water?
Scott: My favorite pre-event meal has to be grilled Oregon salmon that tournament roommate Jay Yelas always brings down.

Straight Talk:  What do you like to do when you’re not fishing?
Scott: I enjoy hunting, golfing, and especially teaching my daughter how to fish. One of her ambitions is to go to University of Alabama and be the first to win the Bass Master Classic. She really enjoys the sport.

Straight Talk: Do you have any advice for aspiring anglers?
Scott: There’s nothing better than hands-on experience and time on the water. Read articles about fishing, fishing magazines, fishing TV shows, but the biggest thing is time on the water and experience. Fish as much as you can.

Straight Talk: Great advice. Is there anything else we should know about you?
Scott: I feel blessed to what I do as a living. I enjoy taking other people and kids fishing and hope I can teach younger children how to get into the sport. I also love taking my dad and uncle fishing and trying to put them on some fish… like they used to do for me when I was kid.

Wanna learn more about Scott? Join him for Twitter party on May 2nd at 12pm EST. Use #FLWchat to ask questions and be qualified to win a Straight Talk Android phone! Until then, be sure to head over to for a chance to win a day on the water with an angler like Scott.

Straight Talk Data Clarification

Share & Bookmark
We want to take this opportunity to address a topic that we know is important to you - data limits on your Straight Talk plan.

You may have heard rumors online that there is a hard cap of 1.5GB for data on Straight Talk.  We want to clear this up for you right away: We are NOT cutting off data at 1.5GB on Straight Talk.  The data limit in reference only applies to Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP™) AT&T-compatible SIMs on our sister brand, NET10. In fact, most of our customers enjoy their unlimited data plans with no issues or complaints regarding their data speeds or service. Please see sections seven and eight of Straight Talk’s terms and conditions for full details.

Still worried about your data usage? Here are a few tips to help you conserve your data:

  1. Connect to WiFi whenever possible to avoid using data entirely. WiFi Finder can help you discover open WiFi networks.
  2. Close applications that are not in use (this can save your battery, too!).
  3. Turn off auto-updates for apps or change the settings to update over WiFi only.
  4. Turn off automatic photo uploading or change the settings to upload over WiFi only.
  5. Turn off push “as items arrive” email. Instead, set your email account to sync every hour or longer.
  6. Browse mobile friendly websites instead of full webpages, which use more data to view.
  7. Use apps that help you manage data. In Android 4.0 or later, you can set limits and alerts on your usage. Otherwise, you can download 3rd party apps for Android and iOS such as:
    • Onavo – iOS/Android
    • Data Usage - iOS

Thank you,

Tax Tips!

Share & Bookmark
April 15 will be here before you know it so if you’ve been putting off filing your taxes it’s time to get on the ball.  We’re here to offer a few tips for you to make the process a little less stressful.

Tax Tip #1: Filing via DIY software? Do your homework!

There are many DIY tax options out there – be sure to choose the one that’s right for you. Before purchasing, take some time and scour the web for product reviews.

Tax Tip #2: Save money by filing sooner rather than later.

We’re still early into tax season which means there are deals available from tax prep companies and software programs. If you file soon you can take advantage of these great deals and alleviate the last minute rush on tax day. It’s a win-win!

Tax Tip #3: Don’t stress – you can always file for an extension.

Running into a snag that will prevent you from filing on time? Not to worry – you can always file for an extension. Form 4868 is available online and is included in most DIY tax prep software.

Tax Tip #4: Turn your return into savings

If you’re getting a return, sit back and relax - extra cash is headed your way! Use that cash to purchase a Straight Talk Wireless smartphone and you’ll turn your tax return into savings of $950/year.*

Mobile Technology: What’s Next?

Share & Bookmark
There’s no denying it – cell phones have come a long way in the past 20 years.  Now we can browse the internet, order food, and stream live TV… all on the go! But what does the future hold?  Here are 5 of our favorite up and coming mobile technologies:

Waterproof cell phones
Have you ever wanted to take a call in the shower? You might be able to soon thanks to Liquipel. With this waterproof phone coating, you’ll soon be able to sing and chat in the shower.

Facial Recognition Technology
Entering passwords and pins to get into your phone can be a pain. But with the Facelock Pro app, your phone-- and all of the personal information it contains—will be protected by your pretty face. Check it out here.

Mobile Blood Pressure Monitor
There are tons of fitness and health apps out there. Now Withings has created a mobile blood pressure monitor that provides you with the ability to monitor your heath on the go. Bonus: All history is automatically saved onto the device, making it easy to track and evaluate your progress.

Battery Life
Say you find yourself in an emergency situation and you have little to no battery life left on your cell phone. Thankfully, there is SpareOne – an emergency phone, which was just revealed at the 2013 Consumer Electronic Show. This device is powered by one AA battery and has the ability to keep a charge for 15 years!

Flexible Screen
According to Yahoo! News, Samsung introduced a new technology called organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that makes phone screens paper thin and flexible. Which means two things: 1. You’ll be able to fold up your cell phone like a map. And 2. Time to start practicing your origami skills.

If you could pick any of these cool new technologies, which would YOU choose? Let us know in the comments!

Straight Talk Tutorial – How to Set Up Your Wireless Home Phone

Share & Bookmark
Get ready to cut your home phone bill in half! The simplicity provided by the Straight Talk Wireless Home Phone enables you to make both nationwide and international calls for only $30 a month.

Ready to get your phone up and running?  We’ll walk you through the process step-by-step below, and Laura provides great guidance in this video tutorial. Let’s do this!

Step 1: Open that box up!
See, that wasn’t so hard. Inside you’ll find the following items:

                ·         Home phone unit
                ·         Antenna
                ·         Rechargeable battery
                ·         Power adapter
                ·         Service guide
If you purchased the phone online you should also have your service plan

Step 2: Install the battery
Turn over your home phone unit, remove the battery cover and connect the connection cable into the battery port. Place the cover back on and you’re in business.

The battery you just installed is a rechargeable backup that allows you to make and receive calls in the event of a power outage. It will be fully charged in about three and a half hours.

Step 3: Install the antenna
Align the antenna with the port on the back of the wireless home phone unit. It’s critical that the antenna is installed correctly in order to obtain optimal signal strength. After about two dozen rotations the connection should be secure. Resort to the signal strength indicators on the unit. If nothing is lit up, there’s a good chance the antenna is not installed correctly. Rinse and repeat until your signal indicator is glowing.

Step 4: Give it some juice
Insert the power adapter plug into the DC input port into the back of the wireless home phone unit and then plug the power adapter into the wall. Presto – the unit will turn on automatically. You’ll know you’re in business because the power indicator will turn blue. Want to turn it off? Just hold down the power button for one second.

Step 5: Connect a telephone
Cord or cordless? It doesn’t matter! You can plug in up to two ports for you corded phones, or the base unit of your cordless phone. You’ll be able to use your cordless phones in and around your home.

Step 6: Activating the Service
You’re almost there so keep it up! To activate your service, visit or call 1.800.299.7784 (from another phone). Have your serial number and service plan or credit card available. Once activated, dial *22890 from one of your connected phones in order to program it.

Step 7: Call away!
You’re ready to go!

Phone Financing + Unlimited* Monthly Plan = Huge Savings

Share & Bookmark
You don’t need to break the bank in order to get your hands on the new iPhone 5. Straight Talk offers financing for as low was $25/month! Plus there’s no interest**, no contract, and you get Unlimited* data. Winning.

Let’s break it down for all you champions of smart savings:
  • iPhone 5: $25/month
  • Unlimited* data plan: $45/month
  • Total cost: $840/year***
That’s $70 per month for a brand new iPhone 5 AND all the talking, texting, and data access your heart desires. All on America's largest, most dependable networks, with no contract.

Check out the iPhone 5 on a leading contract plan:
  • iPhone 5: $199.99 with a 2 year contract
  • 10 GB data plan: $140/month
  • Total cost: $1,799/year
Ouch! With a contract plan, you’re looking at $140 a month for the highest data, talk, and text plan they offer. They don’t even have Unlimited* data plans (did we mention Straight Talk’s Unlimited* plan is only $45/month?). Plus you STILL have to pay for the iPhone, which is $199.99. And you’re stuck with a 2-year contract. Don’t fall for the “sign your life away and get a cheap iPhone” trick. Head to your nearest Walmart store and save yourself $950 a year. Learn more at

What would you do with the yearly savings of $950? Tell us in the comments below.

Surpassing Verizon, TracFone notches 1.1M net adds in Q4

By Mike Dano

Feb. 9 2011 - 6:03 pm - América Móvil's TracFone MVNO service netted a whopping 1.1 million new subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2010, finishing the period with a total of 17.7 million subscribers.

TracFone's net adds put it in the same league as some of the nation's Tier 1 wireless carriers. For example, Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ [1]), the nation's largest wireless carrier, recorded 955,000 total net customer additions in the fourth quarter, ending the period with 102.2 million "total wireless connections."

Such a comparison isn't completely fair, however. TracFone doesn't operate its own wireless network--instead, as an MVNO, the company essentially piggybacks on the networks of Verizon , AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T [2]) and T-Mobile USA, reselling their services under TracFone's brands, which include Straight Talk, Net10 and others. Thus, TracFone's net customer additions are also counted by its host carriers under their "wholesale" column.

Nonetheless, TracFone's stellar growth is notable. The company has grown its U.S. subscriber base from 14.4 million in December of 2009 to 16.7 million in September 2010 to 17.7 million at the end of the fourth quarter of last year.

As for TracFone's subscriber metrics, the company's minutes of use skyrocketed 219 percent year over year, from 94 in the fourth quarter of 2009 to 300 in the fourth quarter of 2010. TracFone attributed the growth to its Straight Talk unlimited service. TracFone's average revenue per user grew from $10 to $14 during the same period while its churn remained relatively unchanged at around 4 percent.

CTIA-The Wireless Association's statement on usage and cost for mobile phone calls

WASHINGTON, DC CTIA-The Wireless Association® issued the following statement today in response to the OECD Communications Outlook report on usage and cost for mobile phone calls:

The headline from the recently released OECD Communications Outlook report reads that Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden have the lowest prices for mobile phone calls among OECD countries, while the highest prices were found in Canada, Spain, and the United States. But since U.S. consumers enjoy the lowest per minute rates of all of the OECD countries, what today’s OECD report really shows is that some international comparisons just don’t make sense – especially when built on flawed assumptions.

The real story is buried on page 275 of the OECD report which states:

“It is important to note again that the OECD calling pattern in the basket can be significantly different than common calling profiles in a specific country. For example, the high-usage OECD basket includes 1,680 outgoing voice calls per year while users in the United States average 9,600 minutes of voice calls (combined incoming and outgoing) per year. In this case the basket provides the cost of buying exactly the calls and messages in the OECD basket rather than what may be considered a ‘typical’ bundle in the market.”
